Bawiti is the bigger village of
Baharia oasis, it has 30.000 inhabitants. The centre of the town is
modern, but going out from the centre the rest of the houses are
made with mud.
Bawiti have spring waters coming out from a rock. The temperature
of this waters is of 30ºC.
The near village called al-Qasr was created in the dynasty 26.
Near you can also visit Qarat Hilway, where until now you can see
tombs with paints from the same dynasty mention above.
Nowadays the city has obtain more fame due to a discovery of a
huge necropolis of mummies of the Greek-Roman period. They don’t
know a hundred per cent sure, but probably is the biggest necropolis
found until now.
In the city of Bawiti you can enjoy also visiting the
museum. This museum offers a story of the life in the oasis of the
desert. There are exhibitions of clothes, jewellery and clay figures
representing the typical activities from the oasis. In this oasis we
can also see “Gebel al Ingleez” that his traduction means the
English mountain. Is a fort that was build by a Capitan called
William, is located in the top of the mountain to control the
comings and goings of the Libyans.
But we can not forget the valley if the mummies, near the town of
Bawiti, that although it was discover nowadays it is in an
extraordinary conditions.
Possibly is the bigger discovery of a necropolis of mummies in
Egypt. It was discover when a donkey stumbled with a tomb. Hundreds
of mummies have been excavated, and they think that there could be
around 10.000 in all the necropolis including mummies of nobles and
queens. The cemetery go back to the Greek-Roman period.
Some of the mummies that have been found until now were masks of
gold with splendid designs of the antique Egyptians Gods. Not all
the mummies where buried the same way, some of them where covered
with plaster, other ones with linen materials and others in
sarcophagus made of terracotta with representations of the human
head. Most of the mummies discover they are in very good conditions,
and their clothes and jewels indicate us a mix between the Roman and
the Egyptian styles.
Whitout forgetting the marvellous white and black deserts.
