Dakhla oasis is located at the northeast of Kharga and at
310 Km at the southeast of Farafra. This oasis is composed by 14
villages with a population of 70.000 inhabitants approximately.
Dakhla is one of the most remote oasis from Cairo and consider the
most beautiful oasis from all Egypt. There is about 30.000 acre of
cultivated land. Most of his inhabitants are farmers that day by day
are fighting against the desert dunes to save their crops. The
fields and gardens are in his majority full of blackberries, dates,
figs and other citric fruits. Dakhla oasis although his increase in
inhabitants and the government help that has raise his economy they
have continue maintaining his customs and traditions. Dakhla is the
only place in Egypt where until now they construct water wheels
which are driven by buffaloes. They are made with palm tree wood and
clay vases called “saqiyas”. This oasis is at 200 Km from Kharga
communicated by a road.
Thanks to the discoveries we know that Dakhla oasis was inhabited
since the prehistory time, and that there was a big lake. The
neolithic rocks paintings founded shows that the lake was frequented
by elephants, buffaloes and ostriches. At the time that the lake was
drying, the inhabitants of the oasis were emigrating to the Nile
valleys. |
