Due to the canals in this area, is called also as the Venice of
Egypt. The city of around 500.000 inhabitants firstly was known with
the name of Crocodilopolis, later it was called Arsinoe.
Medinet El-Fayoum is the capital of the province and is located
in the center of this depression.
The most famous attractions of this city are the waterwheels,
build in the Greek era and the obelisk that was found in two pieces
but was restore and place in this city. Until this moment because no
more discoveries have been done it is thought that this is the
unique obelisk in Egypt with a rounded top, and has a cleft where a
golden statue of Ra was placed.
The canal is the main avenue where the traders of the city goes
to sell their products.
