All the oasis were a crossroad for the grate caravans,
but specially Kharga, because you can appreciate a chain of
fortresses built by the Romans to protect the caravan of Darb
el-Arbain. Kharga use to be one of the stopping places of the slave
caravan between the north of Africa and the south.
Is the biggest oasis of Egypt that have 60.000 inhabitants, from
these 1.000 are Nubians that move here after the construction of
Nasser Lake.
Due to the Nubians that move to this oasis, the houses are design
with a Nubian style.
To the south of Kharga we can found the oasis of Baris, the
second biggest settlement of Kharga.
In this oasis you could see palms, tamarisk, acacia, rice
and others cereals. The inhabitants of this oasis besides the
agriculture also they are dedicated to make baskets and mat makings
with the palm leaves.
Two of the most important monuments of Kharga are the Temple of
Hibis and the necropolis of Bagawat.
In this oasis are also spring waters, one of them we can find it
in the village of Bulaq. These waters can reach the 43ºC and are
good for the treatments of rheumatism and
allergies. |
